Big East brawl features Huskies against Orange

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/10/2010 - Syracuse, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The second-ranked Syracuse Orange continue their assault on the rest of the Big East, when they welcome the Connecticut Huskies to the Carrier Dome for a conference showdown this evening.

Jim Boeheim's Orange are sitting atop the Big East standings, tied with Villanova at 10-1. Syracuse has reeled off an impressive 10 straight wins entering this contest, including last weekend's 71-54 victory at Cincinnati.

The Huskies have dealt with some adversity this season and the results have not been positive for the most part. After a strong start to the campaign, UConn has hit a bit of a wall in league play. The team, now under the guidance of assistant George Blaney due to a medical leave by Jim Calhoun, is just 4-9 in Big East action thus far. The team was able to end an ugly three-game slide with last Saturday's 64-57 victory over DePaul. Still, the Huskies are at a distinct disadvantage here, as they are winless in five true road games this year.

The Orange own a 49-35 advantage in the all-time series. These two teams split a pair of meetings last season.

The Huskies outscored the Blue Demons 25-1 at the free-throw line and won the battle on the boards, 36-29, two keys to the victory in Storrs on Saturday. Jerome Dyson led the offensive charge with 20 points, thanks in large part to his 10-of-11 showing at the charity stripe. Stanley Robinson added 10 points to the cause, as UConn shot just .413 from the floor overall and just 1-of-7 from behind the arc. It was a poor shooting performance for a team that is delivering on over 46 percent of its shots on the year. Dyson is the team's offensive catalyst, averaging an impressive 19.0 ppg, while ranking second in assists (105). Robinson is next in line at 16.2 ppg and also ranks second in rebounding (7.6 rpg). Kemba Walker is both a scorer (13.3 ppg) and deft distributor (team-high 135 assists), while Gavin Edwards (10.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg) is one of the conference's best bench players.

The Orange have thrived at both ends of the court this season and the result is victories in 23 of 24 matchups thus far. Syracuse is averaging a robust 82.0 ppg and leads the nation in field-goal percentage at 53.1 percent. Iowa State transfer Wes Johnson has been awesome thus far, leading the Orange in both scoring (16.2 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg). Help comes in the form of super sub Kris Joseph (11.2 ppg), Andy Rautins (10.7 ppg) and Arinze Onuaku (10.3 ppg). The Orange were able to use a late run to distance themselves from the Bearcats in Fifth Third Arena over the weekend and extend their win streak to 10 games. Rautins hit four three pointers and led four players in double figures with 20 points. Joseph poured in 17 points, followed by Scoop Jardine and Onuaku, who tallied 11 points apiece. As for Johnson, he struggled, netting just five points in 26 minutes of work.
